This disorder of the brain was first described in 1906. It is a progressive brain disease that causes memory loss and other thinking problems. Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease that gets worse with time, and today it ranges high in the numbers of the world killer diseases. It destroys brain cells with time and this is what affects the life of a victim where he/she can’t work. Alzheimer’s disease is the number one culprit for short-term and long-term dementia cases.
To date, the disease has no cure but treatment can be given; and if done in time, it can help relieve this disease. The victims that live with the disease require lot of support so that they can at least cope with the disease and keep its symptoms at bay.
To date, there are many scientists and researchers the world over who are carrying out research round the clock to see whether they can identify a cure that can keep this disease under control as its death rate is still very high. For example, in America alone, about six million people are living with the disease.
As well as researching on this disease, the need has also arisen to increase research efforts in both uncommon and common skin diseases where for example, scientists try to see whether there could be a connection between the Alzheimer’s disease and skin cancer. This way, if they get a cure for one, they will be able to get a cure for the other one too. Alzheimer's disease research has made a lot of headway since the disease was described by a German doctor one century ago.
However, not many new discoveries have been made and scientists have mostly improved on the discoveries that were made some years ago to get a foot hold on this disease. Among the major steps in research that the scientists are taking is that of trying to make detection of this disease as early as possible so that the victim can be taken care of before the disease can ravage the cells of their brain.
Research is also trying to look bat the relationship between Alzheimer’s and heart disorders because most victims of heart diseases are apt to get Alzheimer’s. They are also working on victims to test the drugs that have become effective over time and they are working on ways to make them even more effective. There is every indication that one of these days, a remedy will be arrived at, and this man killer will be put at bay
